What is this class about?

During the 10th grade, students take IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) classes, also known as PRE-AICE. The overall goal of Pre-AICE classes is to prepare students for the rigors of AICE classes. 

This class was prepared specially for you. Here you will find everything you need. Notes, assignments, quizzes, labs, videos with explanation of some topics, etc.

Is chemistry hard?

Many students are scared about this class. I'm here for you , to help you every time you need it. I cannot tell if you have a question unless you speak up. Please do so.

 How can I avoid getting behind?

This is an IGCSE class. That means that we will have homework and or lab reports to complete every week.

 What do I do if I have problems with my homework?

Again, I'm here for you. Please check with me if you do not understand how to complete the assignments or exercises. We can arrange some time to see it together before or after school.

  Our goal in the Pre-AICE course focus on:

   Assessment Methods used for Pre-AICE

At the end of the year during May and June, students are required to sit external exams for all of their pre-AICE subjects. The dates for these exams are set by the University of Cambridge, so on occasion fall outside of the regular US school year. Students are expected to attend all exam sessions. 
The papers are then sent back to the UK for marking and we usually receive the results in early August.

Cambridge exams are designed to test students ability to apply the knowledge that they have acquired during the year.

There are three exams they need to pass:

  Paper 21 – (ex paper 1, or 11) – 45 minutes – 30%

A multiple-choice paper consisting of 40 items of the four-choice type. This paper will test assessment objectives AO1 and AO2. Questions will be based on the Extended syllabus content (Core and Supplement). This paper will be weighted at 30% of the final total mark.

  Paper 41 – (ex paper 2 or 21) – 1 hour 15 minutes – 50%

A written paper consisting of short-answer and structured questions. This paper will test assessment objectives AO1 and AO2. Questions will be based on the Extended syllabus content (Core and Supplement). 80 marks This paper will be weighted at 50% of the final total mark.

  Paper 61 – (ex paper 6) – 1 hour – 20%

Alternative to Practical This paper will test assessment objective AO3. Questions will be based on the experimental skills in Section 7. The paper is structured to assess grade ranges A*–G. 40 marks This paper will be weighted at 20% of the final total mark.

HOW TO PRESENT YOUR HOMEWORK

  1. FAILING TO COMPLETE ALL EXERCISES OR QUESTIONS IN THE ASSIGNMENT, WILL RESULT IN AN "I" (Incomplete) Which in the gradebook is equivalent to an "F"
  2. If you are absent to an assignment, YOU should ask me or check on the HOMEWORK PAGE.You will have the same time you were absent to make up the work. (Example: if you were absent Monday and Wednesday (2 classes) you can pickup the homework on Friday and you will have until the next Thursday to give the work to me)
  3. If you were absent to a TEST or QUIZ, you have to make it up on the NEXT WEDNESDAY after school. NO exceptions. You should get the arrangements to take the test on the MAKE UP DAY.
  4. Homework MUST be written in pen (Blue or black only)
  5. Graphs & Charts MUST BE AS FOLLOWS
    • in graph paper
    • with LABELLED AXES AND UNITS
    • using ruler
    • they must be pasted on the homework page using only tape or glue (NO STAPLED GRAPHS WILL BE ACCEPTED)
  6. Any LAB SETUP DIAGRAM showing a process must be done in COPY PAPER and PASTED into the lab report.
  7. Homework with the WRONG TITLE or WITHOUT TITLE will NOT BE GRADED.
  8. HOMEWORK WITH NO NAME WILL BE PLACED IN THE NO-NAME BINDER AND IT WILL NOT BE GRADED.

ACTIVITY NUMBER 1

  • Read the following items in the website: SAFETY RULES, SAFETY SYMBOLS and the Safety Notes
  • You will draw and color a safety poster.
  • The poster will show 4 different situations (together or separated) of actions that are not allowed to do inside the lab)
  • It can also be a comic strip with a dialog. BE CREATIVE. Pictures will be randomly google searched.
    • Plagiarism is not an option.
    • You have to color the poster.
    • Black and white work will not be accepted!!!

THIS ACTIVITY SHOULD NOT TAKE MORE THAN 1 HOUR. TURN IN YOUR WORK TO THE SUBSTITUTE TEACHER BEFORE LEAVING THE CLASS.

ACTIVITY NUMBER 2

This activity will represent the first lab in your lab notebook. you will begin this at school and you can finish that as HOMEWORK.

This activity will be collected next class.

Cut computer papers in squares of (2.5 x 2.5 inches). In total you will need A MINIMUM OF 10 papers . On each of those papers you will 1 draw lab equipment (you can get the information from the POWER POINT PRESENTATION PDF document. LAB EQUIPMENT

Each paper will have only one lab equipment, You will paste the papers in your lab notebook on the left of the page. DO NOT STAPLE THE PAPERS. Paste them using tape or glue.

On the right, you will write the name, description and when we use it.
