2020-2021 CHEMISTRY IGCSE -HONORS HOMEWORK PAGE




  1. Failing to complete ALL exercises or questions will result in an “I” (incomplete) which is equivalent to an “F”

  2. If you are absent, YOU should ask ME or check on the HOMEWORK PAGE.You will have the same time you were absent to make up the work. (Example: if you were absent Monday and Wednesday (2 classes) you can pickup the homework on Friday and you will have until the next Thursday to give the work to me)
  3. If you were absent to a TEST or QUIZ, you have to make it up THE FOLLOWING WEEK. NO exceptions. Check with me to arrange the date and time.  
  4. Homework MUST be written in pen (Blue or black only) 
    DISTANCE LEARNING: Your work will be assigned through TEAMS or you CLASS NOTEBOOK.  I will place links on this page so you do not miss any assignment/assessments. This is your best source of information. 
  5. NO TYPED WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED

  6. Graphs & Charts MUST BE AS FOLLOWS:
      1. In graph paper.
      2. with LABELLED AXES AND UNITS using ruler.
      3. They must be pasted on the homework page or lab report using only tape or glue (NO STAPLED GRAPHS WILL BE ACCEPTED)
      4. Any LAB SETUP DIAGRAM showing a process must be done in COPY PAPER and PASTED into the lab report.
  7. All homework look similar. Homework with the WRONG TITLE or WITHOUT TITLE WILL NOT BE GRADED.
  8. HOMEWORK WITH NO NAME WILL BE PLACED IN THE NO-NAME BINDER AND IT WILL NOT BE GRADED

DISTANCE LEARNING

K-12 – ZOOM –  MICROSOFT TEAMS

IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN MICROSOFT TEAM MEETINGS, YOU NEED TO:

  1. Login to your MDCPS PORTAL with your credentials, then look for the SIGN IN BUTTON. (This is for your daily attendance, not the attendance for each class)

  2. Go to OFFICE 365 – You will need to login again

  3. Open TEAMS (You will see a bunch of classes)  

  4. LOOK FOR YOUR PERIOD CLASS TEAM 

Attendance will be taken during the class at any moment. 
You need to be PRESENT AT ALL TIMES during the class. 

Many times during the class I will give you an activity, assignment or quiz. You need to be present in order to complete it TOGETHER WITH YOUR CLASS. 

If you have problems with TEAMS, or your PORTAL, or your ELECTRONIC DEVICE, please contact me ASAP so we can address the issue properly.

First Nine Weeks

HW DUE DATE: A= WEDNESDAY 10/21; B= TUESDAY 10/20

AT HOME LAB #2 = SEPARATION METHODS #2 = CHROMATOGRAPHY

MATERIALS NEEDED: 

  • COLORFUL PIGMENT = M&M candies (one of each color) OR spinach leaves OR markers, OR sharpie markers, OR any colored substance. 
  • SOLVENT  =  For candies, you can use water (you can use tap water, but it works better with distilled water), for spinach leaves you can use alcohol and water mixture, for sharpies you can use acetone. 
  • Absorbent paper (coffee filter paper, construction paper) – computer paper and paper towels do not work
  • Toothpicks (4 or 5) You can use any pointy thing
  • Eye drop
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Calculator
  • Hair dryer
  • Container to hold the experiment. (You can visit the notes in the matter section)

How to present the videos for the labs at home

You will have to show: 

  • A VIDEO IN YouTube which WILL NOT OVERPASS 1 MINUTE and will include
    • Title of the project
    • FIRST NAME ONLY of the author and Last name initial)
    • PERIOD
    • Materials (as captions OR similar)
    • Procedures (how to setup the  filter)
    • complete setup (explaining in the video how the filter works. Do not forget to show the filtrate and the residue
    • How could you use this procedure in the future?
    • You can add bloopers at the end of the video.   

ONCE YOU FINISH THE VIDEO, FILL OUT THE FOLLOWING OFFICE FORM

AT HOME LAB #1 

SEPARATION METHODS #1= FILTRATION AND CRYSTALLIZATION

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Cup or pan you can microwave or heat
  • Coffee filter paper, paper towels, or cheese cloth, or cotton balls.
  • A funnel to hold the paper, if not, a strainer to hold the paper or the item you will use.
  • if you do not have a funnel or strainer, try cutting the top of a plastic bottle and use it as a funnel.
  • Plastic spoon or fork (you can use a metallic one)
  • A glass to contain the filtrate for several days or weeks,
    where you will grow the crystals of the filtrate. 
  • ONE SOLUBLE COMPOUND (Salt, sugar, etc)
  • ONE INSOLUBLE COMPOUND (Pepper, sand, small rocks etc)
